Full unbundling of the local loop in Japan, allowed the growth of competition to NTT, and lead to
a dramatic change in Japan's telecom landscape. Softbank started the Broad-Band roll-out in Japan
with ADSL after acquiring Tokyo-Metallic, starting Japan's broad-band revolution. Slowly the structure
of the new telecommunications world is emerging, with VOIP networks, national optical IP networks,
FTTH dominating (NTT is planning 30 million FTTH connections, with about 2 million already rolled out
in 2004). Read a detailed overview of Japan's new telecom landscape

Japan's telecom landscape:
Towards a fully optical IP based national network...
Japan is moving to a communication model with mobile voice communications, mobile internet access on the move,
while in the home and offices there will be VOIP over fully IP-based optical networks, and a substantial minority
keeping VOIP based copper connections. All major carriers are building out nationwide optical networks, and will
in the near future convert all voice traffic to VOIP.
