Summary
This report gives a thorough overview of R&D by foreign companies in Japan bundled with hands-on advice for
companies planning, building, or refocusing technology R&D in Japan.
The author has been working in and with Japanese high-technology R&D since 1984, when he came first to Japan
to start up a European-Japanese R&D cooperation between the German Max-Planck-Institute and NTT Research and
development. The author has managed one of the Hitachi R&D labs, has build an international research lab
at Tokyo University and co-initiated a national Japanese R&D project in electronics. The report is based on
20 years of hands-on experience in R&D in Japan, together with many observations and systematic study.
This report is a useful tool for corporate managers planning, building or refocusing technology R&D in Japan.
