Eurotechnology-Japan Report:
"L-mode - NTT's Telephone based Internet and Email Service"
Summary
NTT introduced L-mode on June 26, 2001 aiming to provide internet style content and email access
to people at their homes who don't use PCs, and L-mode can also be accessed on the road on
new-style public payphones equipped with chip-card readers. Many details of the L-mode service
are similar to NTT-DoCoMo's i-mode service.
At the date of this report (July 2002) about 500 L-mode content partners are providing
L-mode services, such as banking, entertainment, weather forecast, shopping, tickets, and
local government services. Main usage by subscribers is for email, entertainment and weather forecast.
NTT hopes that in the future all fixed line telephones will be equipped with L-mode. Japan Telecom has
introduced a similar and competing service: J-web.
