Summary
Sharp and J-Phone introduced the world-first camera-phone (J-SH04) in November 2000 in Japan. Four years later (October 2004) about 75% percent
of mobile phones in Japan are camera phones and we expect that in 2005 the market penetration will saturate around 75%-85%, i.e.
almost all mobile phones in Japan will be camera phones. Top range models have 2 or 3 Megapixel cameras and autofocus and
represent disruptive innovation for the imaging industry.
While camera phones and sending photographs across the radio link are not a magical solution for carriers to increase customer spending (ARPU),
camera phones have created a considerable new industry with associated printers, photo-finishing kiosks and a variety of online services. Camera phones
also enable new services based on QR-code (2D-barcode) input, which may lead to a variety of new transactions.
The present report describes Japan's market for camera phones and the Japanese camera phone industry quantitatively and
qualitatively in approx. 170 slides with around
120 photographs.
This reports is necessary reading for all telecommunications professionals, equipment manufacturers and software engineers building new
services around camera phones. Previous editions of this report have been purchased by senior management of telecommunication carriers,
CEOs and founders of high-tech venture companies, managers from equipment manufacturers, photographic companies and many other high-technology
companies, consulting companies and investors from all over the world.
