Eurotechnology-Japan Report:
"Building foreign business in Japan - Should we just forget about
Japan and use our limited resources for booming China?"
Summary
Japan is the world's second largest economy, and therefore presents large business opportunities for
European and US companies with the right products, the right approach and the necessary committment.
This presentation first summarizes the key issues facing Japan today as a background to business development
in Japan. In the subsequent sections the report illustrates some issues facing foreign corporations
entering or expanding their business in Japan. The report explains some of the key mistakes foreign
companies make again and again when approaching business development in Japan. An example of a
sofar spectacularly successful company (Starbucks), and an example of a catastrophic failure (the fictitious company "Quick - The Chemist")
illustrate how to enter Japan and how not to enter Japan.
This (and similar) presentations have been given by the authors many times to CEOs and senior executives of European and US
large and small corporations, at Chambers of Commerce, and business school programs (e.g. Business School of Chalmers
Technical University for senior executives from scandinavian companies such as Ericsson, Telia, ABB, VOLVO and others).
