Summary
The government of Japan has declared bio-nanotechnology as one of the focuse areas on which hope is placed
for Japan's future economic expansion. Consequently research funds are channeled into the bio-nanotechnology
area. This document gives an overview of bio-nanotechnology in Japan, summarizes a few selected
research activities, and mentions particular research strengths in Japan, such as carbon-nanotubes.
In the second section of the presentation, the situation of start-ups and venture capital in Japan is
summarized. In particular, some reasons slowing start-ups in Japan are discussed and measures necessary to
accelerate the creation and progress of start-ups in Japan is discussed.
The presentation was given at Stanford University, at the EU-Japan Center for Industrial Cooperation in
Tokyo, and at a number of other locations.
