Broadband internet access in Japan is among the cheapest in the world (on the order of US$ 50 per
month for unlimited use), and broadband internet access (mainly ADSL) penetration was 25% in 2002, and
is expected to approach 75% in 2006.
Fibre to the home (FTTH) is being rolled out right now, at the end of 2004 there were about 2 million FTTH connections.
Internet infrastructure and services continue to expand strongly in Japan driven by competition between the incumbant NTT and
newcomers, especially Softbank.
