13. imode and JAVA
13.1 What about imode and JAVA?
JAVA enabled handsets have been introduced in Japan on 26 January 2001. The JAVA enabled
imode handsets (series 503i)
went on sale on 26 January 2001 and are now generally available in Japan. Initially, JAVA enabled
handsets were due to be introduced for imode from late autumn 2000,
however the introduction has been delayed until 26 January 2001. JAVA enabled handsets
contain the K virtual machine (KVM) from SUN separate from the browser.
Users are able to download JAVA applets into the handsets for games,
agent type services and other applications.

13.2 What is "iAPPLI"?
"iAPPLI" is DoCoMo's tradename (trademark) for JAVA applications which can
be downloaded via DoCoMo's imode mobile internet service to JAVA enabled imode handsets.

13.3 Which "iAPPLI" (JAVA mobile internet applet) services are available now?
There are thousands of "iAPPLI" available, some are free and some are for sale or part of
a subscription. "iAPPLI" exist in many different classes. For weather forecast, games,
alarm clocks, for train time table information, map display and many other applications. "iAPPLI"
can also work as agents in the the background collecting information from a server. An example of such
an "iAPPLI" is DoCoMos fee-"iAPPLI", which displays your daily usage. This "iAPPLI"
collects the usage and fee information autonomically, starting at preset intervals and downloading
fee and usage information automatically in the background and displaying the fees graphically on demand.

13.4 Which handsets are JAVA enabled?
JAVA enabled handsets went on sale by DoCoMo in Japan on 26 January 2001.
The JAVA enabled handsets
contain the K virtual machine (KVM) from SUN. Today the majority of i-mode handsets has
JAVA capability, and many handsets come with a number of "iAPPLI" preinstalled.
